Have you given up on making a difference in the world? Do you feel trapped in the same drudgery day after day, dealing with the problems of life? That was the boat Peter was in. Being a disciple of John the Baptist, he knew about the Messiah and hoped He would come one day. In his heart, he wanted to help people and make a difference in the world he was in. But he also was a fisherman who toiled to make a living. We see in Luke Chapter 5 that Peter had hit a ‘dry fishing spell.’ No matter how much effort he put into his work, there simply weren’t any fish. No fish meant no income. Peter was discouraged.
But when Jesus came into the picture, everything changed.
TAKE HIM AT HIS WORD!
When He came into Peter’s boat, Jesus asked him to go fish again. And like many of us would do, Peter complained. Going fishing when you knew you’ve done it before and didn’t get any fish made absolutely no sense to the natural thinking person. But, Peter obeyed. He did what Jesus said…and there were so many fish, Peter needed help to pull them in!
Astonished, Peter realized he was wrong for doubting Jesus. In the Scriptures, he said, “Oh, Lord, please leave me – I’m such a sinful man.” (Luke 5:8) But you know what? Jesus didn’t leave Peter. Instead, He embraced him as His new disciple. That’s what Jesus does today. He embraces us in Love and encourages us to not be afraid, and that we can do anything with our Savior! So if you’re downtrodden in this life, cheer up! You can change the world with Jesus at your side, one person at a time.
